Minimum Requirements for a Decent Watch
There are lots of watches streaming through your vision of how a decent watch would look and feel like. And may of them look truly eye-bewildering. However, when you pay decent amount of money for a watch you should not only concern about the looks but also the how the watch can withstand years of use. So, I am going to reveal what you should expect minimally from a watch apart from the visual gimmicks.
1. All Stainless Steel Body.
A decent watch must feature stainless steel case. Some of the watches uses stainless steel only on the case back while lacking the rest of the case might be made of other materials like resin or plastic. Stainless steel feature can increase the longevity of the watch solely. That way the watch can stand abuse that can come from the outer environment, a drop for example.
2. Mineral Glass Face
The face of the watch not only features aesthetics but it is the main protective appliance that stands between the extremely vulnerable dial and the outside factors. Thus, the face must be hard enough to withstand effects of the environment like scratches. A mineral glass must be minimum expectation that you should ask for. Seiko's hardlex technology can be a better protector as long as the hardness goes. Sapphire glass, though expensive, is virtually scratch-proof and takes the most brutal abuse.
3. Circled Bezel
The watch must have a circle shape. It is the perfect shape that can protect the watch from harm's way such as drops. Also, most of the watch parts are made to fit circled shapes. So you will never have difficulty finding spare part for your watch.
4. Screwed down case
Lastly, the back of the face must be screwed down in the factory, which will protect the watch's mechanism from damage. Water might get into the watch's mechanism if this process is not done properly. Dive watches which can protect the watch up to 200 meters of depth can be a good example for these kind of watches.
Some snapped case watches might also be as protective as the screwed down watches.
I am not getting into the topic of mechanism since both quartz and automatic have proved themselves in cases of reliability. You can choose between these two as you might wish. However, the brand of the mechanism can matter here in terms of accuracy and durability.
